Section 1 — About the South Korea AI Basic Act

Build accountable AI governance around risk and transparency.

South Korea’s Framework Act on the Development of Artificial Intelligence and the Creation of a Foundation for Trust, commonly known as the AI Basic Act, establishes requirements for the responsible development and use of AI systems. The current law is in force in 2026 and introduces specific obligations for high-impact AI and generative AI.

Key requirements include AI transparency, high-impact AI classification, risk management, user protection, human oversight and documentation. Providers of high-impact AI must assess whether their systems fall within the high-impact category and maintain measures supporting safety and trustworthiness.
