Cyber Essentials is the UK Government-backed cybersecurity certification scheme developed by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). It is designed to help organizations of all sizes protect themselves against common internet-based cyber threats.
The scheme focuses on five technical controls:
- Firewalls
- Secure Configuration
- Security Update Management
- User Access Control
- Malware Protection
Organizations can pursue Cyber Essentials certification or Cyber Essentials Plus, which includes independent technical testing of the same five controls. The current technical requirements are version 3.3, effective from 27 April 2026.
